I always enjoy a trip to Dublin to photograph a wedding, and quite often it will be an intimate setting held in a restaurant. Which I feel certainly suits my candid way of working and photographing weddings. There is a certain feel to such a venue that is palpable.
The Anglers Rest is where Emma & Ross would hold their ceremony. It’s a restaurant and bar tucked away at Strawberry Beds, Chapleizod in Dublin. But of course beforehand it was a visit to their respective parents homes to cover the preparations on behalf of both.
Once that part of the day was covered it was off to the Anglers Rest, have a quick look to see where I’ll be working. To get a feel for the space, and await Emma’s arrival. Sometimes a tight space can be ideal for a wedding photographer like myself to document. Getting in and around the guests, spotting an image on a whim, filling the frame. Soaking up the limited light for a creative image.
I have to say I absolutely loved it. The Anglers Rest during a wedding ceremony and reception is quite tight. And like any situation you have to make the best of it. Get into a rhythm of working and a good feel for the space available. It is a venue that is bustling, busy, atmospheric. And often with lovely light coming through. Often the most challenging of spaces can produce a set of images that will really separate the documentary photographer from everybody else. This is just my opinion of course. But perhaps further to that, the idea of producing a set of unique images to the couple is still always vital without any doubt….
