Quite often I’ll head to Kilorglin in Co. Kerry for the famous Puck Fair. But the odd wedding also draws me to the Kerry village too. And it is generally a wedding held at the Sol Y Sombra* tapas restaurant in the heart of Kilorglin. I have been there a few times at this point. And this is where Maria & Paul would hold their wedding ceremony, a wedding held during the lockdown of 2020. In my experience, a wedding held in a restaurant tends to be an intimate affair. And given my reportage style of photographing weddings, that intimate nature is something that works well for me.
I had photographed Maria’s sister’s wedding in Dingle a few years previous, and it was nice to see her and her husband once again. Plus, they had a couple of kids in tow. I often wonder where the time goes.
Maria wanted that same candid approach for her wedding to Paul. When the client has a good idea of what they want it makes the job itself so much more enjoyable. That first hand experience is invaluable. The documentary wedding style ensures that what you get image wise will be absolutely unique. And not for the sake of it. Allowing the day to move at its own pace and picking the images as it along moves can only produce a set of unique imagery.
This was my fourth wedding of 2020. By October it’s often been a run of three a week for a sustained period. But this is the situation many of us in this industry find ourselves in. Adapting to the confined and often restrictive nature that a lockdown brings with it was still a new experience. But once a rhythm is found then it will play out in as a natural fashion as possible.
