While the bulk of my work is and always has been wedding photography, every now and then I will also offer a family portrait session. Generally, these sessions have been for former clients (though not exclusively so) who after a few years or more have now got a few kids in tow. This is also nice to see. And it is great to reconnect with those I have previously worked for and whose wedding day I have photographed. They know how I like to work. They have a fair idea of what I could potentially offer
Often, they’ll have gone down the road of the typical studio set up. Which is quite popular. Though in my opinion is now rather formulaic. The confines of the studio can be restrictive. While it is ideal for some it is certainly not suitable for others. Personally, I’d have zero interest in setting up a studio and doing this. I certainly wouldn’t have the patience. And I have enough to keep me busy with my wedding photography work. For me there is little in common with both. Especially given my fast-paced attitude to photographing weddings.
Going from the freedom of collecting the images from a wedding as they fall as opposed to the generic, and I suppose repetitive, setting of a studio hardly fills me with joy.
And yet when contacted for a session I have an idea in mind. Usually a loose idea. One where the family can just let loose themselves for an hour or so. There is often a local spot they’d like to go to. More can be gathered with kids just doing their own thing. Out in the open. With the parents trying to keep up, or just catch up! And for me I’ll just let them do their own thing and document it as I go. And the same attitude is taken with regards to say a communion or a confirmation day.
Keep it relaxed. No props, just fun.
